Saab upgrading Norwegian radars under NATO contract
by Richard Tomkins
Washington (UPI) Oct 11, 2017

Saab announced Wednesday it will upgrade air surveillance radars in Norway under a contract received from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency.

The upgraded radars are Sindre 1 units, which Saab will deliver to Norway between now and 2020, the company said in a news release.

Saab Technologies Norway and Saab Defense and Security USA will work on the project in Halden, Norway, and Syracuse, N.Y., respectively. The company's work will include replacing obsolete hardware and upgrading old software, Saab said.

"Saab's radar upgrading approach is a proven and effective way to extend the service life of existing air surveillance radars," Tore Bekkevold, managing director at Saab Norway, said in a statement. "The Royal Norwegian Air Force will benefit from our low-risk, cost-efficient upgrade program."

Sindre 1 radars are part of NATO's chain of radar systems. They have been in operation in Norway since the early 1990s.

Saab did not disclose the monetary value of the award.
