Second round of solar auction to light up Australia's capital

The Clean Energy Council has congratulated Zhenfa Solar and Elementus on their successful projects in the second round of the ACT Solar Auction, which will provide large amounts of clean energy at a low cost to residents when the solar farms are completed.

Clean Energy Council Policy Director Russell Marsh said the ACT Government had shown great leadership in its support for the technology.

"The ACT Solar Auction will deliver more than $100 million in local investment while providing jobs and skills for locals in a new and exciting industry," Mr Marsh said.

"Along with the 20 MW Royalla Solar Farm by FRV (Fotowatio Reneable Ventures), the successful project in the first round of the Solar Auction, the three solar farms will provide enough power for the equivalent of approximately 10,000 homes.

"Each solar farm consists of tens of thousands of solar panels and will be a major engineering achievement when completed," Mr Marsh said.

The two successful bidders were Zhenfa Solar for the 13-megawatt Mugga Lane Solar Park near the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre, and Elementus for its 7-megawatt OneSun Capital Solar Farm in the district of Coree.

"While some very large projects have been built in other countries, large-scale solar is still a new technology in Australia and there are many local challenges that need to be overcome," Mr Marsh said.

"Consequently, with every project we build we are also developing local skills and experience, as well as becoming more efficient and driving down costs."
