Solarcentury, together with Momentous Energy, have announced the formation of Solarcentury Africa, a joint venture based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Solarcentury Africa will be working across the commercial roof, solar park and isolated grid markets, to meet the increasing energy demands of businesses across Southern Africa.

The new solar company benefits from Solarcentury's 15 years' experience as a leading international player in the solar industry, together with Momentous Energy's local knowledge and expertise.

Solarcentury is one of the world's most respected solar companies, with an enviable reputation earned through numerous high profile installations, including the internationally acclaimed and award winning, solar bridge at Blackfriars in London. Solarcentury's experience is underpinned by a world class engineering team and continuous product innovation.

Momentous Energy compliments the joint venture with its in-country knowledge and robust infrastructure; it is currently constructing one of the very first solar projects under the South African Department of Energy's (DoE) Independent Power Producers (IPP) programme, with a 7MW solar park on a 19Ha farm in Rustenberg.

Solarcentury Africa is well positioned to offer the complete range of solar related services, from development and finance, through to EPC and monitoring support; a unique offering in the Southern African market.

Frans van den Heuvel, CEO, Solarcentury said, "Launching this joint venture with Momentous Energy means we're ahead of the curve in being able to supply roof and ground installations to meet anticipated growing demand for solar energy from Southern African countries. Solarcentury has installed solar on more types of roofs than any other company so we have the technical know-how and management experience to enable our customers to generate cost effective, stable and carbon-free electricity. The drive towards cost effective energy generation in Southern Africa is coming and Solarcentury Africa is ready for it."

Solarcentury Africa has already completed its first project - a roof installation for a large property company, and is also planning to install the biggest solar roof-top system in South Africa in the coming months.

Gareth Warner, Managing Director, Solarcentury Africa and Managing Director, Momentous Energy said, "Momentous Energy has previously worked with Solarcentury on several solar projects in the UK, so the joint venture was an obvious extension of our already successful relationship. This, together with the natural synergies between the two companies, means that Solarcentury Africa is ideally positioned to meet the predicted growth in demand in the next few years from Southern African countries for solar energy."

Houston TX (SPX) Jul 23, 2013
Rice University nanotechnology researchers have unveiled a solar-powered sterilization system that could be a boon for more than 2.5 billion people who lack adequate sanitation. The "solar steam" sterilization system uses nanomaterials to convert as much as 80 percent of the energy in sunlight into germ-killing heat. The technology is described online in a July 8 paper in the Proceedings o ... read more
