SpaceX successfully completed its final launch of a record-breaking year early Tuesday morning, deploying 21 Starlink satellites into orbit from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 12:39 a.m. EST, marking the company's 134th orbital mission in 2024.

"This is the 16th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Crew-6, BlueBird-1, USSF-124, mPOWER-B, and 11 Starlink missions," SpaceX noted.

The mission had been delayed from its original schedule of early Monday morning. SpaceX did not disclose a reason for the postponement, but the adjusted launch window on Tuesday extended until 1:28 a.m. EST.

A Record Year for SpaceX

With 134 successful orbital launches, SpaceX shattered its previous annual record of 96 launches in 2023, achieving a nearly 40% increase. This year's rapid cadence underscores the company's dominance in commercial spaceflight and its ability to sustain a demanding schedule.

Among the highlights of the year was a historic series of launches showcasing both successes and challenges. In one notable setback on July 12, the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket failed to deploy its payload of 21 Starlink satellites after launching from Vandenberg Space Force Base, resulting in the loss of all satellites onboard. However, SpaceX's operational resilience has been evident, with the company consistently achieving mission objectives across subsequent flights.

Direct-to-Cell Capability Expands

The 21 satellites launched Tuesday include 13 equipped with direct-to-cell capabilities, advancing SpaceX's efforts to provide global cellular connectivity through its Starlink network. This feature positions the company to further expand its suite of telecommunications services to underserved and remote areas.

Tuesday's mission capped a whirlwind three-day period in which SpaceX conducted two other successful launches: a Starlink deployment from Vandenberg Space Force Base and a four-satellite mission for Astranis from Cape Canaveral.
