Spain successfully dropped a GBU-48 Paveway bomb from one of its Tranche-2 C-16 Eurofighter Typhoon jets for the first time last month, the air force announced Friday.
A test team with the air force's Arms and Experimental Logistical Centre carried out the launch late last month in the waters off the Gulf of Cadiz, the service said in a statement.
The drop came after the target was identified and a GPS signal performed a guided launch.
The event marks a significant increase for the C-16's air-to-ground capabilities, the service said.
It also permits the execution of high-precision, totally autonomous, "anytime" attacks.
The ordnance will enable the C-16 to carry out simultaneous offensives against several ground targets, the air force said.
"These achievements demonstrate the strong will of the Air Force to maximize the capabilities of the C-16 arms systems in the shortest time possible," the air force said.
