New homes for Mexican village after landslide
Mexico City (AFP) May 26, 2014 - Mexico's government presented on Monday 125 new homes to residents of a southwestern mountain village that was buried by a massive landslide that killed 71 people last year.

President Enrique Pena Nieto visited La Pintada, a coffee-growing village in Guerrero state, to unveil the two-story cement houses in the hamlet of 400 people whose wooden homes were crushed in September 2013.

La Pintada became a tragic symbol of the devastation brought by twin hurricanes Ingrid and Manuel that pummelled Mexico's east and west coasts last year.

"I am very moved to see the faces of the men and women who went through tough times, and today are still standing, and committed to moving forward," Pena Nieto told townspeople as he inaugurated a memorial park.

Ingrid and Manuel left 157 people dead across Mexico.

As Pena Nieto spoke, the first named storm of the hurricane season, Amanda, weakened to a category-three hurricane far off Mexico's Pacific coast.

5.1 magnitude quake hits southern Iran
Tehran (AFP) May 27, 2014 - A 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook a southern Iranian city on Tuesday, US seismologists said, with the tremor felt as far away as Dubai but no immediate reports of casualties.

The quake struck at around 10 am (0430 GMT) and was centred 66 kilometres (41 miles) south of Qeshm by the Strait of Hormuz, the US Geological Survey said.

Iran's official IRNA news agency put the quake's magnitude slightly higher at 5.2 and said there were no initial reports of casualties or damage.

The quake also shook the larger port city of Bandar Abbas and was felt across the Gulf in Dubai, where residential and office towers shook for around 10 seconds but were not evacuated.

Iran stands on several seismic fault lines.

In April last year, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Iran and neighbouring Pakistan, killing 40 people.

A massive quake in December 2003 struck the southern city of Bam, killing 26,000 people and destroying its ancient mud-built citadel.

Storms in southern and central China have left at least 26 people dead and 10 missing, state media said Monday, as emergency measures were taken to deal with the extreme weather.

In Guangdong province 15 have died since Wednesday and five were missing due to the storms, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing local flood control authorities.

Xinhua said working teams and relief materials were sent to the affected areas as part of an emergency response.

Seven people died and three were missing in Hunan because of the downpours, it added.

Pictures showed flooded streets in the city of Lining, and residents eating dinner sitting ankle-deep in brown water.

Storms also battered the southwestern province of Guizhou, where three people died on Saturday night and early Sunday.

A rescuer in Jiangxi province died after his boat capsized in a river while searching for a missing school pupil, Xinhua added.

State media gave no details about the final missing person.
