Telvent has announced that it has been selected to design, install and manage the distributed control system (DCS) for Shams Power Company's Shams-1 solar thermal power plant in MadinatZayed, 75 miles (120 kilometers) southwest of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

This joint venture of Masdar (60%), Total (20%) and Abengoa (20%) selected Telvent's solution to control and operate one of the world's largest concentrated solar power projects and the first of its kind in the Middle East. Extending over an area of approximately 1.5 square miles (2.5 square kilometers), the plant will generate 100 megawatts of power from 768 parabolic trough collectors.

With this Telvent solution, Shams Power Company's plant operators will have the ability to control and supervise all solar plant processes in accordance with the most current technology, allowing it to manage the position of the solar power trough collectors to efficiently capture the sun's energy over the entire course of the day, anticipating weather conditions and improving the power block output.

According to Telvent's chairman and CEO, Ignacio Gonzalez, "Telvent, through its innovative technology and deep expertise, helps solar plants produce optimal results in a secure and sustainable way.

This project with Shams Power Company involves one of the largest solar projects on the planet and continues our leadership in solar energy while further demonstrating our solutions for this sector."

Telvent was selected for the project due to its reliability, adaptability and expertise in the solar energy field. The company is a leader in developing and implementing solutions for the delivery of intelligent information to maximize solar energy production.

This project marks the twelfth Abengoa-owned commercial power plant for which Telvent has developed integrated control systems. Telvent also has installations with integrated solar plants in Spain, the U.S., Morocco and Algeria.
