Battery manufacturer Saft America has been contracted by Thales Australia to supply lithium-ion batteries for prototype Hawkei tactical vehicles.

The batteries are to be delivered in the first quarter of this year in what the company hopes will be a prelude to a later order for batteries for as many as 1,300 vehicles.

"The Hawkei project signals the growing use of Li-ion technologies to power military and defense applications throughout the world," said Thomas Alcide, president of Saft America Inc. and general manager of Saft's Specialty Battery Group. "Saft's longevity and system design expertise uniquely positions our company to partner in the development of next-generation technologies and applications, and we are honored to be part of this program."

Saft says its Li-ion battery is a lightweight system and within the dimensions of a traditional lead-acid battery. It will power the starting system of the Hawkei, as well as lights, ignition and silent watch capabilities.

The Hawkei is a light 4x4 armored vehicle being developed for the Australian military.
