Hurricane Linda strengthens off Mexico's Pacific coast
Mexico City (AFP) Sept 8, 2015 - Hurricane Linda strengthened to a Category 2 storm off the northwest Mexican coast Monday, packing winds of up to 105 kilometers (65 miles) per hour, forecasters said.

Linda was located 590 kilometers (365 miles) to the south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula at 2100 GMT, the US National Hurricane Center said.

The hurricane had weakened slightly from earlier in the day, when winds had topped out at 155 kilometers per hour.

It had also slowed its movement toward the coast from 22 to 19 kilometers per hour, according to the Miami-based NHC.

But authorities warned that sea swells from the storm are beginning to affect the coast and will spread in the next couple days, causing "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions."

They also said the hurricane -- upgraded from a tropical storm Sunday -- could cause very heavy downpours in the states of Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Nayarit and Jalisco and urged the local population to exercise caution.

Typhoon Etau barrelled toward the Japanese mainland Tuesday, packing strong winds and heavy rains as authorities advised more than 120,000 people to evacuate due to possible flooding.

The storm, with wind speeds of up to 126 kilometres (78 miles) per hour, was around several hundred kilometres south of Tokyo on Tuesday afternoon. It was expected to land on Japan's main Honshu island on Wednesday.

Japan's weather agency issued heavy rain and strong wind warnings, with Japan Airlines saying some southwestern regional airports could see delays or cancellations.

Rival All Nippon Airways said its morning flights to and from the central city of Nagoya might be cancelled.

Last month, powerful typhoon Goni hit the southernmost main island of Kyushu, leaving at least one person missing who was later found dead, more than 70 others injured and disrupting rail and flight services.

More than 600,000 people were advised to evacuate ahead of the storm.
