U.S. military service buys Israeli radar for testing

RAF orders radar warning systems for its Puma helicopters
Basildon, England (UPI) Jul 30, 2015 - Royal Air force MK2 Puma helicopters are to be equipped with a radar warning system from Finmeccanica - Selex ES.

The SG200-D radar warning receivers from the company are worth about $29.6 million and are being provided under a contract issued by Britain's Ministry of Defense.

"Our selection of Finmeccanica - Selex ES's SG200-D Radar Warning Receiver means that the RAF's Puma Mk2 aircraft will continue to be some of the best protected in the world," said Air Commodore Richard Mason, Capability Director, Joint Helicopter Command.

"With this contract to replace the legacy Radar Warning Receiver, we have taken a significant step towards upgrading our aircraft, thereby ensuring that we are able to counter both current and future threats."

Finmeccanica – Selex ES describes its SG200-D as a Britain-specific product from its SEER system product line to detect and identify emitters in high-density and complex radar environments.

Under the contract, the company will deliver an unspecified number of systems for installation on operational helicopters and for training and several sets of "A-kit" equipment -- the antennas and cockpit control equipment needed to quickly install the full system as a helicopter switches over from a training to operational environment.

Britain currently operates 24 Puma helicopters.

A tactical surveillance radar for force and border protection applications from RADA Electronic Industries has been bought for testing by the U.S. military.

RADA, an Israeli company, did not identify the service branch but said it was the first by the branch and follows previous purchases of its a Multi-Mission Hemispheric Radar by U.S. integrators and end users.

The radar purchased -- price also undisclosed -- will be delivered before the end of year.

"We are very pleased with the growing interest in our radars by the US market, which we believe will be one of the most important markets for our radar technology," said Zvi Alon, RADA's chief executive officer.

The company's Multi-Mission Hemispheric Radar is an S-band, software-defined, Pulse-Doppler, active electronically scanned array radar. It features beam-forming capabilities, advanced signal processing and provides multiple mission capabilities on each radar platform.

RADA said the radar is suitable to help counter rockets and mortars, unmanned aerial systems and moving ground targets.
