Vast and SpaceX Call for Research Proposals to Advance Space Habitation

Los Angeles CA (SPX) Jan 30, 2025
Vast and SpaceX have issued a joint request for research proposals from the global space science community to drive progress in long-term human space habitation and exploration. The two companies, building upon their partnership, aim to support high-impact scientific research that benefits both life on Earth and humanity's expansion into space. Proposals will be reviewed based on scientific and technical merit, feasibility, and alignment with mission objectives. Approved projects will have access to the capabilities of the Haven-1 Lab, Dragon spacecraft, and private astronaut missions to the International Space Station (ISS).

Haven-1 is set to become the first commercial space station, serving as a microgravity research, development, and manufacturing hub. This facility will enable groundbreaking scientific advancements and technological innovation in space research.

"The Haven-1 Lab provides a revolutionary platform for advancing collaborative efforts in science, research, and in-space manufacturing innovation. By partnering with the scientific community, we aim to build on the invaluable legacy research on the ISS, enabling pioneering research to address real-world solutions and pursuing transformative research opportunities to address and eventually overcome some of the most critical health and scientific challenges of space exploration - challenges that also hold the potential to improve life on Earth," said Vast CEO, Max Haot.

While direct funding is not offered, Vast and SpaceX will provide selected researchers with access to a hosted orbital laboratory, on-orbit crew time, and project support for design and flight qualification - free of charge.

This initiative underscores Vast's and SpaceX's commitment to fostering collaboration with the global scientific community and international partners. By granting broader access to microgravity research environments, Vast will gain crucial experience in operational space station management, informing the development of Haven-2 - the planned successor to the ISS.

Bengaluru, India (AFP) Jan 16, 2025
India docked two satellites in space Thursday, a key milestone for the country's dreams of a space station and manned Moon mission, the space agency said. The satellites, weighing 220 kilograms (485 pounds) each, blasted off in December on a single rocket from India's Sriharikota launch site. Later they separated. The two satellites were manoeuvred back together on Thursday in a "precision" process resulting in a "successful spacecraft capture", the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said ... read more
