Formation has announced that its ToughDisk 3500 Rugged Hard Disk has been selected by ISR, to provide rugged data storage for servers it is providing to both the U.S. Army and to the U.S. Marine Corps. The servers will be used by the Army's Special Forces units throughout the world and are being considered for the Marine Corps' Unit Operations Centers (UOCs). The UOCs are mobile command-and- control operations centers that serve as the focal point of Marine decision- making during all phases of ground warfare. ToughDisk is the key data storage component of the multi-server systems ISR is providing to the Army and Marine Corps. Each system consists of four servers with a total storage capacity of almost 300 GBytes. The servers store all the system software and in some cases will also contain targeting data and moving map information. "We evaluated several alternatives for rugged storage and Formation offered us the best solution in a standard 3.5" form factor," said Jeff Severs, president and CEO of ISR. "We selected ToughDisk because of its ability to handle non-operating shock and to withstand the extreme high and low temperatures in which military units frequently operate." ToughDisk rugged hard disks are high-performance, removable data storage units built specifically to withstand extreme temperature, shock, vibration, humidity and dust conditions. The TD3500 is a rugged drop-in replacement for standard 3.5" low profile disk drives with 73 or 100 GBytes capacity and SCSI or ATA interfaces. "The inclusion of ToughDisk rugged hard disks in data storage systems for the Army and Marine Corps is another example of the use of these products for applications in extreme environments. ToughDisk has already been selected for major defense programs for the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy," said Gene Lovely, Formation Marketing Director. "They have also been selected for commercial applications including use with a new inflight entertainment content loader being provided to American Airlines and Virgin America."
