Ukraine, Kazakhstan Sign Documents On Closer Space Cooperation

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev signed here on Friday a joint statement on the promotion of bilateral cooperationin economy, science and military.

The two presidents signed the document after their talks. The two governments also signed agreements on cooperation action plans from 2006 to 2007 and on cooperation in military technologies.

At a news conference following the summit, Yushchenko said Ukraine and kazakhstan see eye to eye with each other on bilateral relations, multilateral ties and many international issues, and that their talks were fruitful.

He said both countries have great prospects for cooperation in trade, high-tech development, aviation and aerospace.

Under the agreements, Kazakhstan will purchase seven An-148 airliners from Ukraine in two years and both sides will jointly set up businesses to produce agricultural machinery and spare parts.

In addition, both countries will carry out a series of cooperation in Kazakhstan's Baikonour launch complex. Ukraine has also committed itself to helping Kazakhstan train rocket and aerospace experts.

Furthermore, the two sides will enhance cooperation in energy supply, oil transportation and the use and construction of oil pipelines.

Nazarbayev arrived in Ukraine Thursday on a two-day official visit. Besides President Yushchenko, he has met with Chairman of Ukraine's Supreme Council Vladimir Litvin and Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov.

In a speech to Ukraine's lawmakers, Nazarbayev called for support for the establishment of the Common Economic Space, which envisions common tax, customs and transport tariff systems among Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
