Aerojet Rocketdyne, a subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies, has recently embarked on a significant expansion of its production capabilities for solid rocket motors. This development comes in light of a new contract from Lockheed Martin, aiming to provide ongoing propulsion systems for the U.S. Army's Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) program.

In a strategic move to meet both domestic and international demands, Lockheed Martin received a contract modification last year from the Army to ramp up GMLRS production. The GMLRS, known for its precision strike capabilities, plays a critical role in modern artillery systems.

Tyler Evans, President of Aerojet Rocketdyne's Missile Solutions sector, emphasized the company's longstanding commitment to the GMLRS program. "Aerojet Rocketdyne's proven propulsion has powered the GMLRS for decades," Evans stated. He further highlighted the company's dedication to enhancing production efficiency through the automation of processes and modernization of facilities in 2024.

Aerojet Rocketdyne's track record in the GMLRS program is notable, with over 35,000 steel- and composite-cased GMLRS motors delivered to date. The company's recent endeavors in acquiring new equipment, automating processes, and integrating advanced X-ray technology demonstrate a clear focus on increasing production efficiency.

The U.S. Department of Defense's Office of Manufacturing Capability Expansion and Investment Prioritization has also played a crucial role in this expansion. In April of last year, the office announced an agreement with Aerojet Rocketdyne to expand and modernize their solid rocket motor production facilities. This initiative spans multiple locations, including Camden, Arkansas; Huntsville, Alabama; and Orange County, Virginia. The GMLRS was specifically mentioned among the tactical missile systems benefiting from this initiative.

Unique in its capacity, Aerojet Rocketdyne stands as the only manufacturer of both steel- and composite-cased motors for the GMLRS, which boasts a range exceeding 70 kilometers. This capability underscores the company's critical role in the supply chain of this key artillery system.

The concerted efforts by Aerojet Rocketdyne to upgrade its manufacturing facilities and processes underline the growing importance of the GMLRS program in the context of global military needs.
