Paris, France (SPX) Jun 01, 2024
Airbus Defence and Space has delivered the first Sentinel-5 instrument for the European Space Agency (ESA). This instrument, the UVNS (Ultraviolet Visible Near-infrared Short-wave infrared Spectrometer), will be integrated into the MetOp Second Generation Satellite A to enhance monitoring of air quality, ozone layer changes, and wildfire emissions.

Sentinel-5 is designed to globally monitor atmospheric trace gases and aerosols over the long term. Part of the European Union's Copernicus climate monitoring programme, this mission supports the EU and ESA's joint initiative. The spacecraft and instrument will be operated by EUMETSAT, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites.

Operating from a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Sentinel-5 will measure atmospheric concentrations of various gases and aerosols with unprecedented accuracy. This includes ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, formaldehyde, glyoxal, carbon monoxide, methane, and aerosols, covering the entire planet daily. The data will support the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), aiding climate monitoring and environmental decision-making.

The Sentinel-5 instrument is a high-resolution imaging spectrometer system that analyses light reflected by Earth's atmosphere across seven spectral bands, from ultraviolet to shortwave infrared.

Developed by a consortium of about 50 companies from 13 European countries, Sentinel-5 required new technological advancements in optics, electronics, and structures. Airbus, the prime contractor based in Ottobrunn, previously delivered Sentinel-4 and will deliver three more atmospheric Sentinels in the near future, expected to operate for the next two decades.
