In a pivotal development for U.S. national security, BAE Systems (LON: BA) has been chosen by the Space Systems Command (SSC) Space Enterprise Consortium (SpEC) to spearhead the development of a prototype ground system for the U.S. Space Force. This system, part of the Future Operationally Resilient Ground Evolution Command and Control (FORGE C2) project, aims to overhaul the current ground architecture with cutting-edge technologies and methodologies.

The FORGE C2 initiative is set to enhance the Space Force's command and control capabilities for its Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) systems, including both geosynchronous (NGG) and polar (NGP) satellites.

This advancement is critical for transitioning legacy Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) assets into a more integrated and efficient framework. The new system will consolidate key functionalities such as telemetry, tracking, command, flight dynamics, mission management, and ground resource management, paving the way for seamless integration of future space assets.

Don Speranzini, Vice President and General Manager of Ground Systems and Services at BAE Systems Space and Mission Systems, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, "The Space Force's ability to accurately and efficiently detect and track missile launches is of the utmost importance to our nation's ability to defend against these growing threats to national security. We're confident that our innovative approach to FORGE C2 will deliver the best solution to support the future of this vital program."

BAE Systems' selection underscores the company's expertise and innovative capabilities in developing sophisticated defense solutions. It was among four companies chosen to participate in the initial phase of the project, which focuses on the integration and demonstration of prototype capabilities. Following this phase, successful designs will undergo further development and testing, aligning with the scheduled launch of the first Next-Generation OPIR polar satellite in 2028.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for BAE Systems, especially following the acquisition of Space and Mission Systems, formerly Ball Aerospace, on February 16, 2024. The integration of these entities strengthens BAE Systems' position in the aerospace and defense sector, particularly in space-based defense technologies.

The FORGE C2 project represents a strategic effort to advance the U.S. Space Force's capabilities in space surveillance and missile defense. By leveraging newer technologies and integrating current and future OPIR constellations into a unified operational framework, the initiative aims to enhance the nation's defensive posture while optimizing operational costs.
