China Open to Space Collaboration with the US

Sydney, Australia (SPX) Jun 07, 2024
China has expressed its willingness to engage in space exchanges and cooperation with the United States, urging the US to eliminate barriers hindering such collaborations.

"The remarks were made by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning who acknowledged the attention and recognition the Chang'e 6 mission has received from many countries." The Chang'e 6 probe's ascender launched from the lunar surface on Tuesday, marking the first collection of samples from the moon's far side. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson extended his congratulations on the mission's success.

Mao noted the establishment of the working group on Earth science and space science cooperation and the China-US civil space dialogue. Additionally, at the request of the US, the two nations have set up a mechanism to exchange orbit data on their respective Mars probes.

Despite these collaborative efforts, Mao pointed out that China-US space cooperation faces challenges due to US domestic legislation, specifically the Wolf Amendment. "If the US truly wants to push forward space exchanges and cooperation with China, it needs to take concrete steps to remove these obstacles," the spokeswoman said.

The gap is narrowing, however, as Beijing realises the value a solid commercial sector can add to its existing capabilities, exp ... read more
