German company HyImpulse plans additional South Australia launches

Sydney, Australia (SPX) May 31, 2024
Southern Launch and HyImpulse have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for more missions from the Koonibba Test Range and to explore using the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex for future launches of HyImpulse's SL1 orbital vehicle.

The MoU follows a successful launch campaign where HyImpulse completed the maiden launch of their 11.5-meter-tall single-stage SR75 rocket from Southern Launch's Koonibba Test Range on May 3, 2024.

The maiden launch of the SR75 rocket aimed to validate HyImpulse's propulsion technology, which combines paraffin wax and liquid oxygen. After a successful lift-off, the rocket was taken back to Germany for further analysis to aid the development of their SL-1 orbital rocket and future SR75 launches.

HyImpulse is moving forward with vehicle development as the team returns to Germany and Shetland for further engine testing. For South Australia, the SR75-1 mission was a significant step in establishing the state as a key player in the global space industry. The successful launch and demonstration at the Koonibba Test Range indicate South Australia's readiness for the global space market.

The MoU will facilitate further launches of the SR75 sub-orbital rocket from the Koonibba Test Range, providing local researchers with opportunities for micro-gravity experiments. Additionally, Southern Launch and HyImpulse will collaborate on planning a launch of HyImpulse's SL1 orbital vehicle from the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex once vehicle development is complete.
