BAE Systems has been awarded a contract for Identification Friend or Foe, or IFF, transponders.

The deal, announced Friday by the Department of Defense, is valued at more than $28.2 million and is a modification to a previous award classified under the terms of a firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract.

The contract provides the Navy with 528 total of three different variants of IFF transponder and up to 590 Mode 5 change kits, along with 13 integrations of Mode 5 change kits, up to 18 Mode 4/5 remote control units, up to 42 IFF mounting trays, up to 600 shop replaceable assemblies for the IFF transponders, up to 40 Mode 4/5 chassis and up to 73 IFF transponder repairs, according to the Pentagon.

The agreement also includes a option for up to 200 RT-1912 to RT-1912A conversion kits in support of Army operations.

IFF transponders enhance the ability to differentiate between friendly forces and enemy forces in real time. The technology can be used on unmanned aerial vehicles, ships, fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.

Work on the contract will occur in Greenlawn, N.Y., and Austin, Texas, and is expected to be completed in December 2018.

No funds will be obligated to BAE Systems at time of award, and future funding will be determined based on individual delivery orders.

Navy set to commission littoral combat ship USS Omaha

The USS Omaha, the Navy's newest Independence-variant littoral combat ship, will be commissioned Saturday afternoon at the Broadway pier in San Diego.
