The Cold War-era Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) expires in December 2009 and the two sides are seeking to thrash out terms of a new accord.
State Department official Jerry Taylor will head the US delegation and the talks will be held at the US and Russian missions in Geneva until November 21, the US spokesperson said.
The US last month presented Russia with a draft treaty to replace START.
Washington's negotiator John Rood said last week that the US proposal focused on limiting nuclear warheads, even though Russia wanted to open up the negotiations to limits on conventional forces and missile defence.
"We think a treaty on nuclear forces is appropriate," Rood said.
