US forces kill IS operative in Syria raid
Washington, Sept 19 (AFP) Sep 19, 2025
American forces carried out a raid in Syria on Friday, killing a senior operative from the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, the US military said.

"Omar Abdul Qader was an ISIS member actively seeking to attack the United States," the military's Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement, using an alternate acronym for IS.

"His death disrupts the terrorist organization's ability to plot and carry out future attacks threatening Americans and our partners," CENTCOM said.

It is the second raid -- a term that indicates US forces were on the ground -- in Syria in less than two months, following another that CENTCOM said killed an IS leader in late July.

IS rose out of the chaos of the Syrian civil war to seize swaths of territory there and in neighboring Iraq over a decade ago.

It has since suffered major defeats in both countries, but the United States still periodically targets the jihadist group's remnants with raids or strikes to prevent it from resurging.
