Cambodia says Thailand launches air strikes after ASEAN meet Phnom Penh, Dec 22 (AFP) Dec 22, 2025 Cambodia said Thailand launched air strikes on its territory on Monday shortly after Bangkok announced the two nations had agreed to hold talks this week aimed at halting deadly border clashes. Cambodia's defence ministry said the Thai military deployed fighter jets to bomb areas of Siem Reap and Preah Vihear provinces beginning at 4:18 pm (0918 GMT), just hours after regional crisis talks were held in Malaysia. "At 4:18 pm, the Thai military deployed F-16 fighter jets to bombard further deep into the Cambodian sovereign territory in the area of O'Kontoeng, Srae Nouy Commune, Varin district, Siem Reap province," the ministry said in a statement. Siem Reap province is the home of the famed Angkor temple complex, a UNESCO heritage site, and its top tourist attraction, Angkor Wat, which sits just over an hour's drive from Srae Nouy. Renewed fighting this month, which shattered a previous truce, has killed at least 23 people in Thailand and 20 in Cambodia, and displaced more than 900,000 on both sides, officials said. Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow announced a planned bilateral parley after a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which Cambodia is also a member. He told reporters that the discussion would be held Wednesday in southern Thailand's Chanthaburi within the framework of an existing bilateral border committee. Cambodia's interior ministry, noting preparations for the meeting, said it welcomed the regional efforts to end hostilities. |
