Putin calls for tighter gun control after Crimea attack
Moscow, Oct 25 (AFP) Oct 25, 2018
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday urged tighter gun control after a teenager in Crimea attacked his college with a licensed shotgun, killing 20.

Putin told a meeting with military and law enforcement chiefs in the Kremlin that "I specially draw attention to the necessity of seriously increasing control in the sphere of weapons sales."

"I am waiting for concrete suggestions from you here, including of a legislative nature," he said, quoted by the Kremlin website.

Putin spoke after the October 17 attack in Moscow-annexed Crimea in which 18-year-old Vladislav Roslyakov set off an explosion in his technical college and gunned down victims before killing himself.

The Russian leader has blamed the attack on "globalisation". Russian television showed security camera footage of the teen dressed like one of the killers at Columbine High School shooting in 1999 in the US that left 13 dead.

The media has criticised the fact that Roslyakov was able to legally obtain a gun licence after undergoing marksmanship training and being examined by a psychiatrist.

Since the attack, Russia's National Guard has submitted new legislation to the government that would require gun owners to inform the authorities within three days if they moved their weapons to another address.
