UK says Chagos Islands base protects world after UN ruling London, Feb 25 (AFP) Feb 25, 2019 Britain said the US airbase in the Chagos Islands helps "protect people here in Britain and around the world" after the UN's top court said the UK should give up control of the Indian Ocean archipelago. "The defence facilities on the British Indian Ocean Territory help to protect people here in Britain and around the world from terrorist threats, organised crime and piracy," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
