Israel's normalisation with UAE a 'historic day': Netanyahu
Jerusalem, Aug 13 (AFP) Aug 13, 2020
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed "a historic day" on Thursday after the announcement of a US-brokered deal to normalise ties between the Jewish state and the United Arab Emirates.

The landmark deal announced by US President Donald Trump would, once signed, make the UAE only the third nation in the Arab world to have full diplomatic relations with Israel.

It was immediately rejected by the Hamas Islamist group which controls Gaza as a "reward for Israeli occupation and crimes".

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem told AFP that deal "does not serve the Palestinian cause".

Netanyahu was due to make an address on the agreement at 8:00 pm (1700 GMT).

Israel's alternate prime minister and Defence Minister, Benny Gantz, called the agreement "important and significant".

"I call upon other Arab nations to advance diplomatic relations in additional peace agreements," he said.

As part of the deal, Israel had agreed "to suspend" plans to annex Jewish settlements and other territory in the occupied West Bank, according to a joint statement from the US, UAE and Israel tweeted by Trump.
