Guinea opposition to resume demos after junta talks break down
Conakry, April 28 (AFP) Apr 28, 2023
Guinea's opposition said Friday it plans to resume demonstrations against the ruling junta after political talks broke down.

Opposition coalition FVG had postponed protests to give religious leaders mediating the discussions a greater chance of success, but said the talks failed "due to lack of political will on the part of the authorities".

"Having responded to all the requests made by the religious leaders to promote dialogue without success, (the FVG) has decided to withdraw from these unproductive consultations and resume demonstrations in the streets," it said.

The opposition has been calling for a rapid return to civilian rule, as well as a "credible" dialogue and the release of political prisoners.

Under pressure from the Economic Community of West African States bloc, the junta has agreed to hand over to civilian rule after a two-year transitional period starting from January 2023.

The military seized power in September 2021 on the back of protests against Guinea's elected president, Alpha Conde, whose bid for a third term in office was attacked as unconstitutional.

It has banned all demonstrations.
