"A short while ago, two cannons in southern Syria that constituted a threat to the State of Israel were struck by the IDF (military) in the area of Khan Arnabeh in southern Syria," a military statement said.

"The IDF will not allow a military threat from southern Syria and will operate against the threat," it added.

Khan Arnabah lies on the edge of the demilitarised buffer zone that had long separated Israeli and Syrian forces until Israeli troops deployed there after the fall of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in December.

Tuesday's strike comes a day after Israel's military said it had targeted military sites in southern Syria.

Syria's health ministry reported three killed in an Israeli strike near the southern city of Daraa on Monday.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes in Syria since the ousting of Assad by Islamist-led rebels.

Netanyahu has said that southern Syria must be completely demilitarised, warning his government will not accept the presence of the forces of the new authorities near Israeli territory.

Even before Assad's fall, during the Syrian civil war that broke out in 2011, Israel carried out hundreds of strikes in the country, mainly on government forces and Iranian-linked targets.
