Poland says Russia recon plane intercepted over Baltic
Warsaw, June 13 (AFP) Jun 13, 2025
British fighters scrambled to intercept a Russian reconnaissance plane that violated Polish airspace over the Baltic, Poland's military said Friday.

"Another interception of a Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea, this time by two British fighters," the defence ministry posted on X.

A Russian IL-20 entered two kilometres (more than one mile) into Polish airspace over the Baltic sea, the ministry added.

"This is another case of provocative testing of NATO countries' systems readiness."

The two British fighters intercepted and identified the Russian aircraft, which then left Polish airspace, the statement added.

In February, Poland reported that a Russian aircraft had briefly violated its airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Russian military aircraft often approach Polish airspace where they are frequently intercepted by NATO planes.

Poland, a member of both the European Union and NATO, is one of Ukraine's closest allies and serves as a crucial logistics hub for Western military aid to Kyiv.
