Safran to provide S. Korean helicopter engines
Seoul (UPI) Jun 7, 2016 - Korea Aerospace Industries has selected Safran Helicopter Engines as the engine supplier for its Light Civil Helicopter, Safran announced Monday.

That helicopter will be powered by the existing Arriel 2C2 engine, the company said.

Safran said it has also been selected for a new engine on the Light Armed Helicopter, which will feature a new Arriel 2L2 engine.

The 2L2 will be co-developed and manufactured by Safran and Hanwha Techwin under a newly signed agreement.

Hanwha will perform licensed production of the engine, manufacturing major parts and performing the final assembly of the engine.

The Arriel 2L2 is derived from the Arriel 2N and sports a new axial compressor, new high-pressure compressor diffuser, new high-pressure turbine material and will be the most powerful Arriel variant.

It will provide better safety, reliability, power and performance, Safran said.

Exelis has received a $12.3 million cost-plus-fixed-fee, cost-reimbursable, indefinite-delivery-indefinite quantity contract for work on the Advanced Self-Protection Jammer AN/ALQ-165, the Integrated Defensive Electronic Countermeasures AN/ALQ-214, Aircraft Self Protection and the Software Improvement Project.

Work will involve providing engineering services and software support equipment products for the programs.

Services will also include engineering support for Australia, Kuwait, Finland and Switzerland under the Foreign Military Sales program.

Work will be done in New Jersey and has an expected completion date o June 2021.

The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division is the contracting activity.

The Navy's Integrated Defensive Electronic Countermeasures program provides self protection capabilities against surface-to-air and air-to-air guided threats for F-18 fighter jets.

The program's equipment detects, identifies and manages electronic countermeasure responses to radar threats.

Leonardo-Finmeccanica rolls out M-346 for Poland
Rome (UPI) Jun 7, 2016 - The first of eight Aermacchi M-346 trainer aircraft for the Polish Air Force has been rolled out by Leonardo-Finmeccanica.

The aircraft, which will soon begin flight testing, was unveiled Monday in a ceremony in Italy attended by Polish Deputy Defense Minister Bartosz Kownacki.

The M-346 by Aermacchi, part of Leonardo-Finmeccanica, is a jet trainer and light attack aircraft with a maximum speed of 572 knots and a range of 1,070 nautical miles.

It is a twin-engine aircraft with a quadruplex fly-by-wire control system and a digital avionics system modeled on those of latest-generation military aircraft, including the Eurofighter, Gripen, Rafale, F-16, F-18, F-22 and the future F-35.

Poland in 2014 ordered eight of the aircraft with customized systems.

Leonardo-Finmeccanica said the first two aircraft will be delivered to the Polish Air Force by the end of this year. Delivery of all aircraft ordered will be completed by November of 2017.

In addition to Poland, the M-346 has been ordered by Italy, Singapore and Israel.
