Wellington (AFP) Oct 5, 2024
New Zealand said Sunday it had rescued all 75 sailors from a wrecked and burning navy vessel that ran aground and sank off Samoa while conducting a reef survey.

"The incident occurred on Saturday evening," the New Zealand military said. "The 75 left the ship in life rafts and sea boats after the ship grounded."

The ship struck a reef off the island of Upolu.

Video obtained by local media appeared to show the HMNZS Manawanui billowing smoke before it sank.

"The 75 crew and passengers on board HMNZS Manawanui have made it to safety in Samoa," Commodore Shane Arndell said.
