A new tropical storm, Frank, has formed off the western coast of Mexico, weather watchers in the United States said on Thursday.

At 2100 GMT, Frank was about 285 miles (455 kilometers) south of Manzanillo, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles (75 kilometers) per hour, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

Moving toward the northeast at 14 miles (22 kilometers) per hour, the storm could attain hurricane strength late Friday or early Saturday according to current projections, the NHC said, adding that it is not expected to make landfall.
