"They were successfully intercepted by Jordanian air defence systems," the official said.

The Jordanian Public Security Directorate later said in a statement there were "no casualties but only material damage".

"Civil defences and police personnel had responded to 12 reports of falling objects and debris in the governorates of the capital Amman, Zarqa, Jerash, Madaba and Irbid between this morning and 2 pm (1100 GMT)," it added.
