Romania 'relocates' soldiers in Iraq as tensions soar
Bucharest, Jan 7 (AFP) Jan 07, 2020
Romania said Tuesday that its soldiers in Iraq as part of a NATO mission would be "relocated" amid mounting tension over the US assassination of Iran's General Qasem Soleimani.

"To ensure the personnel's safety, the 14 Romanian soldiers who were on a mission in Iraq will be temporarily relocated to another coalition base," the defence ministry said in a statement.

It was not immediately clear if the troops would leave Iraq or be moved to another base inside the country.

Their mission was focused on training instructors for the Iraqi army, as well as advising officials from Iraq's defence ministry and other institutions.

The move is in line with a NATO's announcement on Saturday that it was suspending training activities of Iraqi troops, in the wake of the US drone strike near Baghdad international airport that killed Soleimani, the commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards.

On Tuesday, Romania's President Klaus Iohannis called on the European Union to have "a stronger voice" in reacting to the crisis unleashed by the killing.

"Even if some in Europe consider that, from a geographical standpoint, Iran and Iraq are far away, the two are in our vicinity and therefore this is a cause of concern to us," he said during a visit to Germany.

On Friday, Bucharest issued a travel warning for Iraq, recommending Romanians avoid all but absolutely necessary travel there.

"The situation in Iraq concerns us, because we have a lot of Romanian citizens who live and work in the Middle East," said Iohannis.
