SatService to supply Q V band satcom ground station for Bundeswehr university

SatService GmbH, a Germany based provider of advanced satellite ground systems and a subsidiary of Calian Group Ltd, has secured a contract from the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany to deliver an advanced Q V band satellite ground station to the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich. The project supports both scientific research and modern military satellite communications requirements for the German Armed Forces.

Under the agreement, SatService will design, manufacture, test and deliver a full service satellite ground station built around a high performance 4 metre antenna system. Once operational, the station will enable operation in the Q V band frequency range for geostationary orbit applications, a capability that is not currently available at the University.

Germany and the European Union are increasing investment in satellite communications to strengthen sovereignty and secure access to multiple frequency bands. SatService managing director Wilfried Megger said the new system reflects that focus, noting that access to diverse bands is a critical part of national and European SATCOM initiatives.

Megger said SatService will combine decades of engineering experience with its system integration capabilities to deliver a SATCOM solution tailored to the needs of Germany's defence university. According to Megger, the company delivers not only antennas but complete systems that include software, hardware, cyber secure architectures and operational support, delivered with a strong customer focused approach.

When delivered, the ground station will become part of the terrestrial laboratory of Bundeswehr University Munich. It will support communications in the Q V band between geostationary satellites and ground facilities for scientific applications, enabling experiments and research into high frequency satellite links.

The new station will also provide trainee officers of the German Armed Forces with secure, high throughput satellite connectivity. As part of their education, they will learn about the operational advantages of SATCOM, including continuous regional coverage from geostationary orbit, increased data capacity and improved resilience against interference.

By operating in Q V band with geostationary satellites, the system will help demonstrate and support C5ISRT functions, covering command, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting. These capabilities are central to current and future military operations, where resilient, high bandwidth connectivity underpins decision making and mission effectiveness.
