Arianespace and French start-up BULL are strengthening their cooperation on sustainable spaceflight through joint work on space debris mitigation technology for the Ariane 6 launcher.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding in 2024 to explore the integration of BULL's HORN Post Mission Disposal (PMD) device onto the Ariane 6 Dual Launch System. Initial feasibility studies confirmed the effectiveness of deploying the system on Ariane 6.

The HORN PMD features a large deployable sail that accelerates atmospheric re-entry once missions are complete, thereby preventing the creation of orbital debris. Arianespace and BULL are now preparing a flight demonstration of the system, with potential launch slots from 2027.

Arianespace has long emphasized sustainable operations, signing the ESA Net Zero Space Agreement in 2021 and adhering to French space law requirements. The collaboration with BULL is designed to expand those commitments and integrate practical solutions directly into its flagship launcher.

"As a historic leader in bringing satellites to orbit and beyond, Arianespace has always been committed to a responsible use of space. This innovative collaboration with BULL, a start-up pioneering solutions to mitigate space debris, showcases Arianespace's dedication to being at the forefront of such critical issues. A sustainable use of space is a priority for us, and we are most keen on pushing forward emerging solutions that further sustainable activities in space," said David Cavailloles, Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace.
