Spire Global has secured a new contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to deliver satellite-derived weather data under ESA's Third Party Mission (TPM) programme. The agreement grants European scientists access to Spire's extensive historical Earth observation datasets.

The data, gathered from Spire's constellation of satellites, includes GNSS-Reflectometry and Polarimetric Radio Occultation measurements. These datasets offer key insights into environmental variables such as sea ice extent, soil moisture levels, and precipitation trends, which are crucial for climate studies and operational modeling.

"The TPM programme supports Spire in delivering novel Earth observation products to the Earth science community in Europe," said Matthieu Talpe, Remote Sensing Product Engineer at Spire. "Our datasets are already shaping the future of climate research, enabling breakthroughs like enhanced weather forecasts at ECMWF, the world's premier weather forecasting institution. We can't wait to see how researchers leverage this data to address global challenges."

ESA's Third Party Missions Manager Peggy Fischer emphasized the programme's impact: "Through our Third Party Mission programme, we aim to empower Europe's scientific community with access to high-impact commercial Earth observation data. We're proud to work with Spire to make its GNSS-Reflectometry and Polarimetric Radio Occultation data available to the European scientific community, helping advance both research and pre-operational Earth observation capabilities across the continent."

Paris, France (SPX) Jul 25, 2025
The MetOp Second Generation-A1 satellite has reached a significant milestone in its journey to orbit, with fuelling operations now complete at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. Engineers successfully loaded 790 kg of hydrazine onto the spacecraft, paving the way for the next phase of pre-launch activities. This satellite, MetOp-SG-A1, is the first in a series of three A-B satellite pairs designed to deliver high-resolution, global atmospheric data from polar orbit for the next two decades.
