NASA has awarded Momentus Inc. (NASDAQ: MNTS) a contract to investigate launching critical robotics technologies into orbit, marking a key step toward future autonomous operations in space. The U.S.-based commercial space company has completed the initial study and plans to propose a follow-on in-space demonstration mission, with a NASA award decision expected in September. Momentus is one of two firms under evaluation for this larger effort.

The study, conducted under NASA's Flight Opportunities program within the Space Technology Mission Directorate, examined options for flying advanced robotic systems on an upcoming Momentus orbital service vehicle. These systems aim to showcase autonomous robotic maneuvers for potential use in satellite servicing, debris removal, spacecraft assembly, and lunar surface activities.

Momentus also prepared a commercialization plan to illustrate how space robotics could be deployed in profitable applications at viable costs. "This win demonstrates our commitment to advancing space infrastructure by supporting innovative technologies that can transform how we operate in space," said Momentus CEO John Rood. "We're honored to be entrusted by NASA to help mature these cutting-edge robotics systems."

The proposed mission design uses the company's Vigoride orbital service vehicle, a spacecraft capable of precise payload transport and deployment. Vigoride also serves as a satellite bus for missions including communications and missile tracking. A potential test flight could provide NASA and partners with data on robotic system performance in microgravity, paving the way for more advanced autonomous operations in orbit.

Robots take on new role as human health protectors
Tokyo, Japan (SPX) Aug 15, 2025
Robots, long associated with industrial productivity, are increasingly stepping into the role of human health protectors, as showcased at the 2025 World Robot Conference in Beijing. In one exhibit, visitors navigated the hall with eyes closed, led by a six-legged robotic guide dog linked to a white cane. Developed by Shanghai Jizhi Robotics, the one-meter, 20-kilogram hexapod keeps three legs on the ground for stability, avoids obstacles, and handles steps and uneven terrain for up to three hours ... read more
